I just finished up the first in the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, Storm Front. I first have to state that my dad has been after me to read this series for eons, and I'm not really sure why I hadn't - he's normally spot-on with things he thinks I'd like to read. Turns out dad was right. Again.
Harry Dresden is a wizard - and he's a wizard who is mostly doing odd jobs and minor detective-type work to make ends meet, ever since he had that pesky run-in with the White Council (who monitor and police inappropriate or illegal uses of magic) for killing another wizard, and he's on super-secret probation. Dresden gets dragged into a murder and then several of them in his role as "supernatural consultant" to the police department. One look at the crime scenes and Harry knows he's dealing with black magic and a lot of it.
Fast-paced plot, fun character and witty dialogue - I loved this book. The overlapping of paranormal and magic with the mundane of the everyday world (that one where there rest of us are stuck dealing with too) is a winning combination.
The good news for me is there are a ton more in this series that I now have on my must-read list. Thanks dad.
All for now....
